Coast Guard Emblem

Mr. Carmine A. Ciampa, in his 97th year, a resident of Brooksby Village in Peabody, and formerly of Melrose, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 11, 2019.

Carmine was born in Malden on July 4, 1922. Raised in Malden, Carmine entered the US Coast Guard before graduating from Malden High School. He honorably and faithfully served his country during World War II aboard the USS Wakefield as a Seaman 1st Class. During his three years of service, Carmine crossed the Atlantic Ocean over 40 times, the Pacific Ocean once, and was honorably discharged in 1945. He remained deeply proud of his country, and full of respect for fellow service members. On May 16, 1947,Carmine was married to the love of his life and best friend, Phyllis Crosscup, and they settled in Melrose to raise two daughters.

Carmine attended the Franklin Institute and began his working career as an Electrician with IBEW Local 103. He was a Licensed Electrician for Hixon Electrical Contractors for 45 years, and later for Mass Electric Construction for 10 years. Smart and hard working, Carmine could do anything. He was skilled with his hands, and had the mind to figure things out on his own. He was always willing to help with any home project. In his free time, he enjoyed caning chairs, golfing, and playing the drums, as well as being involved with the IBEW retirees and organizing over 50 reunions for his USS Wakefield shipmates.

Throughout his 96 years, Carmine was a deeply devoted family man. He was full of warmth and greatly appreciated any moments spent with his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In turn, he was loved and greatly respected by both family and friends. His long life is a testament to the love he shared with Phyllis and the blessings he bestowed on his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed, but always lovingly remembered.

Carmine was the beloved husband of Phyllis E. (Crosscup) Ciampa with whom he shared nearly 72 years of marriage. Devoted father of Janet E. Mays and her husband Claude of Forest, VA, and Paula J. Fowlie and her late husband James of Melrose. Dear brother of Theresa Mackey of Portsmouth, NH, and the late John, Joseph, Frank and Charles Ciampa. Cherished grandfather of Jason Decker, Christopher Fowlie, James "Adam" Fowlie, Todd Fowlie, and Kaylin Spinazzola. Loving great-grandfather of Nolan Fowlie, Abigail Fowlie, Jon Fowlie, Lily Hagen, CJ Hagen, Gaetano Spinazzola, Gianluca Spinazzola and Macareo Spinazzola. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Services will be private for family only at Robinson Funeral Home with interment at Forest Dale Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the US Coast Guard. Gifts in memory of Carmine may be made to Autism Speaks Walk, Attn: Team Mac Spinz, 85 Devonshire St., 9th Fl, Boston, MA 02109.
