Tribute & Message From The Family

Esther (Donovan) Sullivan of Woburn, formerly of Melrose, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on August 25, 2021. She was 79 years old.

Born and raised in Melrose, Esther graduated from Melrose High School and Salem State College. Esther spent her career as a teacher in the Melrose Public Schools, retiring in 2003.

Her family will remember her unconditional love and support. She loved her job as a sixth grade math teacher at the Melrose Middle School. She was devoted to the Red Sox, especially Jimmy Piersall. She loved spending time at Moody Beach, Cape Cod and Singing Beach. She enjoyed sewing & knitting but what she cherished most was spending time with family, especially her three grandchildren.

Esther was the devoted wife of 53 years to the late Francis ("Joe") Sullivan, who passed away this past March. She is survived by Susan Sullivan of Melrose, Richard Sullivan and his wife Judi of Woburn, and Paul Sullivan and his wife Michelle Ocampo of Brooklyn, NY. She was the proud grandmother of Emily and Ainsley Sullivan of Woburn and Jules Sullivan of Brooklyn, NY. She was the cherished sister of her twin brother John "Jack" Donovan and his wife Claire of Poinciana, FL. Loving sister-in-law of Kathryn Murphy of Saugus and John Sulllivan of Ft. Myers, FL. She is predeceased by her sisters Carol Sprott and Nancy O'Connor, her brother-in-law Richard Sullivan and her loving dog, Kelley, who passed away in April. She is also remembered fondly by many nieces & nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visiting hour at Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, Sept. 1 from 9:15-10:15am before leaving in procession for her Funeral Mass celebrated at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St., Wakefield at 11am. Condolence & Memory Journal

Hi my name is Zaid. I'm a 17 year old from Pakistan and before the pandemic hit my family and I would go to Woburn MA every year because my dad had work there. We stay at Salem St, where Esther and Joe were also living until they moved to the rest home down the street. I vividly remember the first time I met Esther and the reason I approached her was solely because I loved dogs and her dog, Kelly, was one of the cutest dogs I'd seen. I recall we talked about dogs and the fact that Kelly had a royal spot on her head and that only a few dogs of her breed have that spot. I remember talking to Joe who greeted me with such a warm welcome. I think I met her in 2017. In 2018, I returned to America and would bump into Esther and Joe every other day. I talked to her about the fact that we were going to Maine and she told me about her trips to ogunquit beach. I loved the conversations we'd have. She let me keep Kelly on my lap as we'd sit on the chairs outside her apartment. I'm 2019, I returned and didn't find Esther in the apartment building so I asked around and found out she'd moved to a rest home down the street. I remember I went and bought flowers from a grocery store and went to meet Esther. When she saw me she was really happy. I remember she asked me Zaid do you have a girlfriend? If not, can I be your girlfriend? Which I found really hilarious. I talked to Joe and he hugged me. It truly felt like these people were my loved ones and that I'd known them for much longer than I actually had. Because of the pandemic I wasn't able to go to Woburn in 2020 and 2021. I was saddened to hear Esther and Joe had passed away this year. I'll miss them a lot.

I lived next door to Esther & Joe for many years. I saw her as a good friend and sought her out in recent years to help me with a knitting question. I was not aware that Joe passed away in March. My deep condolences go out to Susan, Richard and Paul on the loss of your parents so close together. May God comfort and keep you as your go forward grieving this tragedy. May the many memories of your times together as a family help in this process.
