The Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church community was saddened this week to learn of the passing of our former sexton Lou Butler.
Lou cared for our building and for our community for a period of 15 years, serving with three settled ministers and during multiple transitions.
Church members, staff, and users of our building remember Lou as always being attentive to our needs and seeking to help. Property committee members and chairpersons remember his essential support, the skill with which he attended to our building, and his sage guidance that often anticipated issues and priorities.
As a community we remember Lou fondly as a warm and kind hearted man who loved our church and our community.

I remember Louie when we were children growing up in the Nunnery Grounds section of East Somerville. We both attended the Hanscom Elementary School and Northeastern Junior High School. My family moved to Burlington in 1960 so I lost touch with many wonderful people in the neighborhood. Louie was certainly one of them. My condolences to Louie’s family especially Carol and Scotty whom I remember fondly.
May Louie’s Memory Be Eternal
