Tribute & Message From The Family

Jane E. (Hayes) Dowd, resident of Stoneham, formerly of Woburn, passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 with her family by her side. She was 74.

She was born in St. John's, Newfoundland on March 31, 1946 to the late James J. and Gladys (Guest) Hayes. When she was two, the family moved to Edgewater Park in the Bronx, New York, where she was a student at the St. Francis de Chantel School. She and her family moved to Massachusetts in 1960 and to Melrose in 1961. She graduated from Melrose High School, and enjoyed swimming in her youth.

Jane Married her beloved James P. Dowd in February of 1969 and they settled in Woburn to raise their family. They relocated to Stoneham in their later years. She worked in the financial services industry for over 40 years and was a Vice President of Salomon Smith Barney when she retired.

Jane's first love was her dear family. As she was her children and grandchildren's biggest fan, she was exceptionally active in their lives. She never missed a school function, sports activity or family get together, and took great joy in helping to raise her grandchildren.

Another passion of Jane's was Genealogy. She took great joy in doing exhaustive research into family history, even traveling to England and back to her beloved Newfoundland to learn more about her families past.

Jane's love, warmth, and kindness will be missed.

Jane was the beloved wife of the late James P. Dowd with whom she shared 48 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Michael J. Dowd and his wife Julie of Chelmsford, and the late John Joseph Dowd. Cherished grandmother of Aidan, Abigail, and Liam Dowd. Dear sister of Patricia McCarthy, Edward Hayes and his late wife Sue Ann, Gerald Hayes and his wife Diane, the late James Hayes, and the late Denis Hayes. Also survived by many honorary grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Due to the public health crisis, services for Jane will be private. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.

Condolence & Memory Journal

To Jane's family,

I never met Jane but she helped me so much with my ancestry. We met through ancestry as DNA matches and she connected me with the "Guest" side of our family. Jane even took the time to mail me some pictures that she had of my great grandmother ( Janes mother and my great grandmother are sisters!)

I am truly sorry for your loss.

Jane was a relative through the Cobb side of my family. Like Jane we are very interested in genealogy and have a passion for finding relations that we were not aware of. I didn't know Jane personally but I think we would have had much in common and could have enjoyed talking about out mutual love of family.

Mike, Julie and family: Jerry and I are so sorry for your loss. I last spoke to Jane right before Thanksgiving when she told me about her illness. She and your Dad were our dearest friends and will miss your Mom and still miss your Dad dearly.
We enjoyed their visits after we moved to Florida and our cruises to the Bahamas.
They would beam with pride when they spoke of you and Julie ,whom they adored and of course your children. The Grandkids were the love of their lives.
We have so many happy and great times to remember and hold dear to our hearts.

RIP Jane and we love you.

I only met Jane recently as we discovered we were family, descending from St. John’s, Newfoundland. She visited with me in 2019 at my home in Massachusetts and we discussed all sorts of interesting genealogy based on her meticulous research. She knew I was beginning the process and she was super helpful in sharing what she knew. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her ❤

Your Mother, Grandmother and Sister was a warm and wonderful person. I had the pleasure of working with Jane at EFHutton and successor firms. She was a loveable workaholic and always gave over 100% at work. Our days at EFH were the best with annual regional summer outings and various Christmas parties. We were a true family. I was invited to attend her retirement party although we no longer worked in the same office. I was happy to see her praised for all her hard work over many years. I'm sorry I haven't seen Jane since I retired to FL in 2015, but I was able to talk with her a few months ago when another friend told me she was not well. I hope my call cheered her a little. Please accept my since sympathy and know I am thinking of you. Rest in peace my friend Jane,

Jane's family,

I am so sad to read that Jane has passed away. We both loved genealogy and we sent many emails and phone calls regarding our hobby over the years. I did get to meet her in person and have corresponded up until she could correspond no more. I am sure her beloved husband and and her son will meet her with open arms.

She was such a gentle person and I will miss her a lot.

Rest in peace dear Jane. Your work on earth is done.

God bless you all.
