Tribute & Message From The Family

Leslie A. (Powell) Scovelle, longtime Melrose resident, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 30, 2020 with her loving family by her side. She was 79.

Born in Malden on May 4, 1941, Leslie was one of four children of the late Charles and Dorothy (Coakley) Powell. Leslie grew up in Malden and in her youth enjoyed spending time with her girlfriends, dancing and roller skating.

In 1967, Leslie met Stuart Scovelle, and in 1968 they were married, settling in Melrose to raise their family.

The most important thing in Leslie's life was her family. She adored her children and grandchildren and was exceptionally active in their lives. She was warm, inviting, kind, loving, and would do anything for anyone that needed help, be it her family or friends.

Leslie and Stuart enjoyed going out dancing and as music lovers to concerts. She also enjoyed family trips to Squirrel Island in Maine and reading.
Leslie will be remembered as a beautiful soul, wonderful mother, and a great friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Leslie was the beloved wife of Stuart B. Scovelle with whom she shared 52 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Nicole M. McCarthy of Melrose and her fiancé Bill Burns of Dorchester, Julie A. Scovelle of Dorchester, and Danielle Clement and her husband Kenny of Hampton, NH. Dear sister of Susan Judge and her husband Fred of N. Andover, Wayne Powell and his wife Judy of Texas, and the late Terry Rogers. Cherished grandmother of Nicholas and Taylor Scovelle, and Corey and Avery Clement. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives & friends will gather in honor of Leslie's life for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, Nov. 3 from 4-7pm. Masks are required and social distancing will be maintained. Funeral Services will be private.

Gifts in Leslie's memory may be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice, Attn: Community Engagement, 360 Merrimack St, Building 9, Lawrence, MA 01843.

Another beloved Squirrel has joined her friends in heaven. I knew her as a bright smile, a warm hug, and a devoted grandmother. I will miss seeing her on the island.

So sorry to hear of Leslie's passing. She was a bright spot on the Island each summer. There was always laughter wafting out of the Scovelle-Ross cottage whenever one walked by. Heartfelt condolences to all the Scovelle-Ross clan.

So sorry to hear this news here on Squirrel Island. I'll certainly miss Leslie's constant smile and laughter, but that is how I will remember her as I pass by the cottage where she spent many summer days and nights with her family. My thoughts go out to all her family.
